Making Your Life As a Work of Art: Cultivating the Jewish Moral Virtues
Rabbi David Meyer
April 7, 14, 21, 28
“The great, saintly souls are lovely to look at just as a great piece of art…” (Solomon Schechter)
Considering the vast storehouses of Jewish wisdom, we often focus our studies on interpreting the Bible, or examining the development of Jewish law, or pursuing matters of historical, philosophical, or mystical inquiry. But contained within our tradition are also magnificent and inspirational works which deal primarily with the development of ethical qualities, moral virtues, and the highest ideals of human conduct.
The sources that comprise Jewish ethical literature are known collectively by the term Mussar, and their primary goal is not to inform, but to transform their students and readers. And these teachings are far from obsolete, for although the conditions of daily human life have changed over time, the human condition itself has not.
Our study of Mussar literature will be shaped by the insight of the great, Rabbi Judah Loew of Prague, who taught that the striving for human perfection is comprised of three aspects; namely, the relationships we develop within our own selves, with other people, and with God.
