Swim Lessons Descriptions


Our Philosophy

Our experienced and dedicated instructors lead small classes that will teach your children aquatics skills in a fun, safe and nurturing environment. Parent and Tot Swim – Register HERE

This is the exciting first dip into the pool for children and we make it special for everyone involved! Parents bring their children (ages 6 months to 3 years) into the pool for a fun lesson with one of our experienced instructors. Sing songs, dance in the water and more. We offer Parent and Tot on Sundays in two age groups: 6 months-2 years and 2-3 years. Swim diapers are required. 

Starfish: Level 1 – Register HERE

Your children will learn basic swimming skills in this fun, no pressure class. They’ll practice blowing bubbles, floating and kicking.

Seahorse: Level 2 – Register HERE

Ready for the next level! Children learn important skills such as beginner front and back crawl, floating, glides (prone and supine), seated dives and treading water.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 1 or children must be able to easily enter the water and be comfortable participating in small groups.

Combo Starfish and Seahorse – Register HERE

This convenient option is for families who want a Level 1 or Level 2 class, but can’t make the scheduled times. Children learn skills from Starfish and Seahorse classes, including submerging their faces, floating and elementary front crawl.

Barracuda: Level 3 – Register HERE

On the move! Students improve their front and back crawl by learning rotary breathing and body rotation. Breast stroke, underwater swimming, dolphin kick and diving will be introduced.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 2 or ability to float and swim independently on front and back for at least 10 yards.

Dolphin: Level 4 – Register HERE

Students will improve their stroke technique and endurance in front and back crawl, breast stroke, elementary back stroke and treading. They’ll refine their diving skills, too.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 3 or basic front crawl and back crawl for 15 yards. Children must be comfortable in deep water.

Sharks: Level 5 – Register HERE

Sharks learn to dive from our diving board! They also learn the butterfly and open and flip turns, while practicing the back crawl and breast stroke.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of Level 4 or ability to easily swim the entire length of pool, exhibit good technique in front and back crawl and swim underwater 10 yards.

Create a Swim Class – Register HERE

Our classes fill quickly and we want to make sure you have the chance to learn to swim! If you have at least three participants of a similar level, we will find you an instructor and place in the pool for your lessons. These lessons are $13 per participant for JCC members and $15 per participant for non-members. Adaptive Swim – Register HERE

Adaptive Swim classes are for individuals with special needs, ages 3 years through young adults. For more information, contact Aquatics Dir. Ashley Vieira at or 781-476-9912. Adaptive lessons are listed in the Aquatics Program schedule on pg. 10.

Adaptive Gym, Swim & Art – Register HERE

This program, for individuals with special needs, children through adults, features 40 minutes of gym time PLUS 40 minutes of swimming. The class develops gross motor skills, teamwork and a positive self-image in a non-competitive environment. Once a month, we will create arts & crafts projects, instead of going swimming.

Participants must be able to change into their bathing suits on their own or have the assistance of a parent or guardian.

  • Dates: 12/6-3/6, (Art days 12/20, 1/17), no class 12/27, 2/14
  • Time: 2:00pm-3:30pm
  • Fee: $120 Member/$144 Community

Adult Swim Lessons – Register HERE

Get special attention in the pool! This clinic is a great way to learn the basics of swimming and improve your technique. Beginners welcome.

  • Days: Monday & Wednesday
  • Dates: 11/30-3/2, no class 1/18
  • Time: 9:00am-10:00am
  • FEE Once a Week: Members $70/Community $98
  • FEE Twice a Week: Members $140/Community $196
  • Drop-In Fee: $10 Member, Community

Adult Masters Swim Team – Register HERE

This class is perfect for adults who want to learn stroke technique, train for triathlons, compete in swim meets or just get some great exercise! We will swim about mile during each practice.

  • Days: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Dates: 11/30-3/5, no class 12/24, 12/31, 1/18
  • Times: Tues/Th 5:30am-7:00am & Sat 7:00am-8:00am
  • Fee: $5 per practice

Inner Tube Water Polo – Register HERE

Our Inner Tube Water Polo league is a big hit. Hop in this winter for some fun!

Age: 21+

  • Day: Thursday (12 weeks)
  • Dates: 12/3-3/3, no class 12/24, 12/31
  • Time: 8:30pm-9:30pm
  • Fee: $5 per class

Glow Splash Party – Register HERE

You LOVED them last year! Come to our next GLOW SPLASH Party! Open to all kids in grades 5-9. Have a blast with us as we hand out glow-in-the-dark necklaces and beach balls, turn off the overhead lights and crank up the underwater lights. Rock out with a DJ from Salem State Radio and enjoy pizza. This party is open to the community!

  • Fee: $5

Lifeguard Certification Course & Review – Register HERE

Get certified, get a great job, have skills for life! Take advantage of these convenient life guard training courses at the JCC.

Prerequisites: You must be able to swim 300 yards Freestyle/Breaststroke without stopping, tread water for two minutes without hands, retrieve a brick from the bottom of the pool 7-10 ft. and deliver it to the shallow-end of the pool in 1:40. Must be at least 15 years of age to take the course; lifeguards must be 16 years old to be hired in the state of Massachusetts.

Lifeguard Course – Register HERE

Receive these certifications, good for two years: CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding & First Aid.

Get the most out of your time in the pool! Our private lessons with expert instructors are perfect for the first-time swimmer, the nervous swimmer or for specialized instruction.

Semi-private Lessons

Semi-private lessons are similar to the private lesson, but for two swimmers of similar levels. Special pricing available for siblings.
