Marblehead, MA — The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore is happy to announce the sale of its Middleton campground today. It is part of an exciting restructuring as the JCC enters its centennial year.

The sale, to developer LAR Properties, was for $3.65 million. “We’re thrilled to move forward and invest this capital in new strategies to make the JCC a sustainable, exciting place for people across the North Shore,” said JCC Board President Lisa Nagel. “We want to be here for another 100 years, at least!”

The Middleton site had been home to the JCC’s Camp Simchah for more than 50 years. This summer, in partnership with Cohen Hillel, the Center launched Simchah on the Hill at its main campus off Atlantic Avenue. It has been a huge success.

“Simchah on the Hill has proven to be a wonderful camping experience, as we had hoped,” said JCC Interim Director Julie Newburg. “We delivered a diverse array of options for families to choose from and campers had an exceptional summer. Our camp committee is already planning for Summer 2011.”

A special Task Force and several committees run by the JCC’s Board of Directors are meeting regularly to develop a new business and strategic plan to move the JCC forward. They are also working with a national consultant who has revitalized many Jewish Community Centers around the country.

The JCC will kick-off its Centennial Celebration on October 3rd with a party for the entire community. Look for details soon!

The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore first opened in Lynn nearly 100 years ago, to help the immigrant population. In 1972, it moved to its campus in Marblehead, where it became a central gathering place for Jewish families, learning and culture on the North Shore.

It’s time to register for the JCC Basketball League’s fall season! We had a great summer, with local hoop star Allie Beaulieu making headlines.

Beaulieu, 19, of Swampscott was the only woman in the 120-player league!

With three older brothers, Allie has been playing basketball with boys since she was old enough to dribble. She’s been playing at the JCC in Marblehead since 2nd grade!

At 5’ 10”, Beaulieu led the Swampscott High varsity team to the state championship in 2009. She now plays varsity at Bates College in Maine.

“I love picking up new moves from different players,” Beaulieu said. “The part of the game I enjoy the most is improving my game, taking knowledge from others to increase my skill level and basketball IQ.”

She credits determination and hard work for her success. “I have a strong work ethic,” she added.

The Jewish Community Center of the North Shore offers a year-round basketball league with a new fall session tipping off in September. Most players are 25-55 years old. “We’re the fastest growing league on the North Shore,” said director Kevin Gilligan.

Here are some league highlights:

The JCC of the North Shore is committed to Competitive Swimming Excellence. The JCC has teamed up with the North Shore Swim Club to offer a great youth program. The connection brings many opportunities along with having a chance to compete against other JCC’s.

The North Shore Swim Club (NSSC) is designed to meet the individual needs of the North Shore area competitive swimmers. In addition to individualized and group training, NSSC offers challenges, competitive opportunities, healthy lifestyle and encouragement for every swimmer in the program from novice to national competitor.

The North Shore Swim Club is a fully sanctioned USS program. The program offers a year round commitment which includes advanced skill development and participation in JCC league meets and US New England, Regional and National meets if desired. The success of the NSSC program is a direct result of a philosophy, which provides for the careful development of the swimmers. The club maintains a small ratio of swimmers to coaches to ensure the highest quality training and development of each individual swimmer. The NSSC program is designed to provide a challenging and fun environment in a quality setting. The NSSC web site at northshoreswimclub.org is maintained up-to-the-minute with the latest information and details so parents and swimmers stay informed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
